Preventing fire disaster in Nigerian institutions
Preventing fire disaster in Nigerian institutions

Preventing fire disaster in Nigerian institutions

Of recent there has been news of a fire disaster in Niger state polytechnic, Zungeru, Niger state. Report has it that the fire disaster destroyed properties worth more than N150 million (See full details ). There have been different kinds of fire disaster within the country. There have always been a recovery measures to curtail the effect of the effect of the fire disaster, but the most important steps has not been taken most times because the right questions has not been asked.
The most important question after such incidence are:
  1. What went wrong
  2. How do we prevent reoccurrence.
Most of our institutions do not have a fire emergency plan, some institutions that have a fire emergency plan do not have implementation officers.
Fire is a rapid combustion reaction involving oxygen, fuel and an ignition source, and its output are heat, smoke or flames.
Fire always begin in an infant phase before maturing to full flames. Hence in the presence of a fire emergency plan and implementation officers, the fire can either be put out in that infant stage or the effect of the fire limited.
It is unfortunate that fire extinguishers are installed in our institutions but no one knows how to operate them (Learn how to operate the fire extinguisher). Sand pails are kept at strategic positions, but no one understands its essence.
It is not enough to have a fire emergency plan, you still need implementation officers, i.e, people who will help you implement the emergency plan in cases of fire emergency. These implementation officers could be fire wardens, fire watch, etc. They can be employed directly, or some members of staff trained to take up the responsibility.
After every fire incident, thorough investigation should be carried out to unravel the root cause; then corrective measures taken to prevent its reoccurrence. These corrective measures aside from the palliative measures to arrest the immediate cause of the incident, other measures could involve; drawing out a fire emergency plan if there was none, reviewing the current fire emergency plan or recruiting/ training implementation officers for the fire emergency plan.
Institutions fire emergency plan should be communicated to everyone, including the students. Everyone should know the fire emergency route, muster point, emergency numbers to call, etc. A timely arrest of the situation can make a whole lot of difference.
Let us adopt the safety of life and properties as an integral part of the system. Let us avoid regression by always looking for recovery measures instead of a progressive plan. Let us make our institutions safe from fire disaster by having a workable fire emergency plan today.

Read How 59 Ikoyi Prisons Inmates Sat For 2017 UTME In Lagos

The Principal of the Ikoyi Prison School in Lagos state, has opened up on how inmates of the facility participated in the recently concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
59 inmates of the Ikoyi Prisons Lagos on Wednesday and Thursday sat for the on-going Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
The figure was an improvement over the 32 that sat for the examination in 2016.
The Principal of the Ikoyi Prison School, Mr Idris Ibikunle, said that the candidates were better prepared this year, adding that he was expecting a better performance.
“More inmates registered for the examination this year because they saw the urge to secure their future and prepare for reintegration after their prison terms. Many of them have realised that they ought not to be in prison if they were educated.
“It is because of lack of education and lack of awareness that pushed some of them into getting involved in dirty habit and anti-social behaviour which landed them in prison.
“Some of them, because of lack of education, were cajoled into participating in criminal activities,’’ Ibikunle said.
The principal added that the prison authority had supported the inmates in preparing for the examination.
Ibikunle noted that the inmates would proceed to the National Open University of Nigeria if they meet up admission requirements.
The Deputy Comptroller of Prisons, Mr Julius Ezeugwu, said that the examination was conducted without any hitch, adding that he was optimistic that the candidates would perform well.
Ezeugwu explained that the examination was taken in batches in order to allow for those who have court appearance to do so.
Mr Kunmi Popoola, the JAMB’s Director of Psychometrics, who supervised the centre, said that the board provided the Prisons School centre with 60 new computers and accessories for the conduct of the examination.
He commended the zeal of some of the inmates towards education as they conducted themselves well during the examination.
“I am happy with the conduct of the examination for the inmates, it was orderly and smooth. The examination is a reformative step and not punitive.
“Those who are about completing their jail terms, are getting ready to be re-integrated into the larger society,’’ Popoola said.
According to him, the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, is very passionate about these class of candidates in ensuring that everyone is given equal opportunity.

The National Youth Service Corps has been beset with a myriad of problems ranging from poor welfare to the avoidable deaths of participants.
Created in the wake of the civil war to foster unity among Nigerians, many are of the opinion that not only has it outlived its purpose, it hasn’t done much to unite us as a people.
Some are of the opinion that it is just another engine through which corrupt  officials siphon public funds.

HUNGER? FUTA Registrar Bites Clerical Officer During Fight Over Memo (photos & Videos)
A sordid drama played out at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), on Thursday, as the institution’s Registrar, Dr. Modupe Ajayi, physically assaulted Mr. Isaac Adams, the clerical officer in her office.
In addition to a rain of blows, Mr. Adams, a member of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of the university, was also bitten in the head by Dr. Ajayi. Sources told SaharaReporters that the brawl took place at about 9:30 am, sparking huge confusion in the University Senate Building.
A source told our correspondent that the fracas developed when Dr. Ajayi was told that a memo was printed out on her office printer behind her back.
“On Thursday morning, Mr. Adams was in the office and trying to download a memo written by the university’s Legal Director to the acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tunde Arayela, in respect of the court order issued to the university concerning the payment of staff salaries.
The memo was posted on our union’s Whatsapp platform but was not easily readable on the phone. This made Mr. Adams use the office printer to print out the memo so that he could conveniently read it,” explained the source.
However, another staff in the office, with apparent loyalty to the Registrar, went to inform her. The information, said the source, incensed Dr. Ajayi, who came out of her office spewing insults at Mr. Adams and attempted to forcefully retrieve the memo from him. Mr. Adams resisted the Registrar, who then decided to use physical assault to get it off him.
“Before we knew what was happening, the Registrar went berserk and bit Mr. Adams on the side of his head and repeatedly assaulted him,” the source narrated.
He also disclosed that the matter has been reported to the leadership of the institution’s chapter of NASU and to the acting Vice-Chancellor.
Another source also informed that the incident has been reported at the Okuta Elerin’la Police Station in Akure.
“We have reported to the matter to the Police because we don’t want to cause any other crisis on the campus,” he said.
Mr. Dele Durojaye, Chairman of the FUTA chapter of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), also confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters in a telephone conversation. The SSANU leader, who condemned the Registrar’s action, disclosed that leaders of his union have taken steps in protest against the dehumanization of the clerical staff.
“Honestly, this is very unfortunate for a university registrar to have descended so low by engaging in a brawl with a clerk. I wonder how this kind of people get to sensitive positions,” he lamented.
Mr. Durojaye also disclosed that the union has contacted its lawyers, adding that Dr. Ajayi should be prepared to face charges.
Calls to Dr. Ajayi’s phone line for her response went unanswered. A source close to her, however, confirmed the incident in a phone chat.
“The incident actually happened, but I can’t speak for the Registrar because she might have her own personal reasons for such a display.
Don’t forget that we are all human. Moreover, it is an in-house matter, not one for the press. I am aware that the Registrar has met with the council over the unfortunate incident,” the source said.
